$20m funding for Australian e-Health centre

A $20 million funding boost will drive new projects at the Australian e-Health Research Centre (AEHRC).

The funding is courtesy of the Federal and Queensland governments, and will see the initiative through until 2012.

The initiative was initially established in Brisbane by the CSIRO and the Queensland government in 2003, and now features research facilities in Adelaide and Melbourne.

So far, AEHRC has helped develop simulated training tools, home monitoring systems and improved imaging techniques to help early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s.

AEHRC CEO Gary Morgan said the new funding will go towards pushing existing projects to their conclusion, in addition to helping new projects get off the ground.

"[These initiatives] will be undertaken with some of the best practitioners and hospitals across Australia ensuring we have the critical mass to apply technology to make a real difference to health outcomes,” Morgan said.
